Mixing oil into foundation? Should you try it?

I remember browsing through YouTube makeup tutorials about 2 years ago and stumbling upon a short video titled “THE MOST AMAZING FOUNDATION TIP YOU’LL EVER LEARN”. This is a video by Wayne Goss, a talented makeup artist, successful YouTuber and creator of a luxurious makeup brush line titled “Wayne Goss”. I love his videos and I’ve learnt an awful lot about makeup since discovering this channel. I’ll link his channel and the original video below.

In this 3 minuet video, Wayne claimed that mixing a drop or two of oil into foundation could transform it into something spectacular. I was a little sceptical at first because I wasn’t in love with the idea of looking like I’ve dipped my face in a bucket of grease, but this tip (not to be dramatic) changed my life. I will say, this isn’t going to appeal to those of you with oily skin but if you have dry or mature skin, you HAVE to try this!

Since Wayne posted his video in 2015, oil mixing wasn’t something I saw a lot of, until now…

Instagram makeup artists have been loving oil mixing recently but they tend to use incredibly expensive oils like the GoodieCo Dream Serum which retails for an astonishing £46 and the Farsali Unicorn Elixir and Rose Gold Elixir which go for around £40! I promise you, you do not need to spend that much money on an oil.

When I first tried this technique, I was amazed. My foundation melted into my skin, looked radiant, luminous and undetectable. But I still had maximum coverage. At this point, I was sold. Mixing oil into stubborn cream products is also an amazing way to revive them. I loosened up my Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage concealer with a few drops of oil and now it performs like it’s just out of the box. Oil mixing has been apart of my makeup routine ever since.

If you have a foundation that you love but it’s slightly to matte and drying, mix in a few drops of oil and you’ll be able to comfortably wear it! I recently purchased Lancome’s Teint Idole Ultra foundation which is a natural to matte finish foundation. Without oil mixed in, my skin felt tight, the foundation clung to dry patches and was uncomfortable to wear. To fix that problem I mixed in two drops of oil and now it’s my go-to. This technique will smooth out your problem areas such as fine lines and dry patches, which makes this ideal for dry and mature skin.

The oil I use and swear by is a fraction of the price of Instagram hyped oils at £10. It’s called Green Keratin Certified Organic Jojoba Oil and it’s vegan and cruelty free. You can get this on Amazon, I’ll link it below.

By the way, this stuff will last you AGES. I’ve barely put a dent in it and I drop two drops into my foundation every time I wear it. It’s excellent value for money. I can’t recommend this enough!

Just a side note, oil mixing only really works with liquid and cream products that are silicone based. Oil doesn’t mix well with water so if you try this method with a water based foundation such as MAC face and Body, MAC Studio Water Weight or Makeup Forever’s Water Blend to name a few, you’ll probably find your foundation will separate on your skin throughout the day. This happened to me when I mixed oil with my MAC Studio Water Weight foundation, it looked terrible by the end of the day. I recommend you stick with a silicone based liquid or cream foundation and I promise you’ll love this technique!
